Lavandin is a cross between the true lavender (Lavandula angsutifolia) and the lavender spike (Lavandula spica). The oil is a steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops and is a clear colorless oil. This hybrid resembles true lavender with a clear scent, but is less refined than lavender due to the camphor notes. While the real lavender has a relaxing effect, the lavandin has a stimulating, invigorating effect due to the camphor content. The botanical name is Lavandula grosso.
Essence « The oils can be mixed with a neutral massage oil, bath oil, shower gel, body milk or with dead sea salt from Volatile. Note: essential oils are highly concentrated. A few drops are often more than enough! Furthermore, the fragrant essential oils can be evaporated in an aroma lamp or with the aid of an aroma stone. And they can be inhaled or processed in aromatic steam baths, baths, foot baths or compresses.
Vaporization: all essential oils are antiseptic and evaporate easily. It is therefore a pleasant way to create a pleasant smell and atmosphere in your home or work space. Put some water in the top of an aroma lamp and add a few drops (maximum 6) of essential oil. Light the tea light in the aroma lamp and the oil will soon start to evaporate. An aroma stone can also be used for small spaces.
Steaming and inhaling: steaming is a very effective way to use essential oils. Place your head under a towel over a bowl of hot water and add 2 to 4 drops of essential oil. It is also possible to put two drops of essential oil on your pillow or on a handkerchief.
Bathing: never use undiluted essential oils in the bath, but mix them with a neutral bath oil. Mix approx. 10 ml of bath oil with 4 to 6 drops of essential oil. The warm bath water promotes the absorption of the essential oils through the skin. A bath of about 15 minutes guarantees an optimal effect of the essential oils. A nurturing foot bath is also possible. Use 2 drops of essential oil with two tablespoons of dead sea salt or 5 ml of neutral bath oil.
Massage: Mix two to six drops of essential oil in 10 ml of neutral base oil. For children, the elderly and during pregnancy, a maximum of 1 drop of essential oil per 10 ml of base oil is recommended.
Compresses: Fill a bowl with warm or cold water and add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil. Soak a towel in this water and place the cold or warm compress on the area to be treated. For example, a cold compress with lavender and Roman chamomile has a wonderful cooling effect on a sprained ankle. For abdominal pain, a warm compress with lavender, marjoram and Roman chamomile is recommended.
Storage
Keep essential oil out of reach of children and pets. They are flammable and should therefore not be stored or used near an open flame. Be careful with polished surfaces: the oil can affect them. Remove any spilled drops immediately. Due to their volatile nature, essential oils evaporate quickly. They are affected when exposed to heat, light and oxygen and should therefore be kept tightly closed, cool and dark. Essential oils can be stored for several years if the bottle is closed properly. After that, the quality slowly decreases. The citrus oils are an exception to this rule: they must be used within 1 year after opening. Other essential oils, on the other hand, such as sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver can be stored for years after opening without decreasing in quality.
Due to the relatively high camphor content, lavandin (unlike lavender) is more of a stimulant. Do not dose or dose much lower in case of high blood pressure, just as in case of (tendency to) epilepsy or (to be on the safe side) in case of brain tumours. Avoid in pregnancy and infants and children under 4 years of age. Lavandin is often used in cleaning products. It is often used to counterfeit true lavender.
With the exception of tea tree and lavender, essential oils should not be applied neat to the skin. If an essential oil accidentally gets into the eyes or if an essential oil causes irritation, immediately apply a fatty plant oil to the spot. In case of accidental internal use, also immediately drink a few sips of fatty plant oil. Essential oils dissolve best in, for example, olive oil or sunflower oil. In addition, these oils have an immediate soothing effect. Immediately call a doctor!
