What do island dressings do?

An island dressing is a large dressing with a wide transparent border, which ensures that a (larger) wound is covered and therefore heals faster. They are also called XL dressings. Island dressings are often waterproof or water-resistant. The name island dressing comes from the shape of a large wound pad surrounded by a wide border. When applying the dressing, it is important that the adhesive border of the dressing does not come too close to the wound. This will ensure that removing the dressing does not cause any discomfort.

What are island dressings used for?

Island dressings can be used for larger abrasions, cuts, and other skin damage, such as after surgery. An island dressing is applied over the wound so that the wound is completely enclosed and remains hygienic. It is therefore important to ensure that the wound is clean (disinfected) before it is covered with an island dressing.

Because there are also waterproof island dressings, they are also used to temporarily cover skin damage such as stitches so that the skin does not get wet during showering. The island dressing is then applied over the wound with suture strips, so that they stay dry.

Island dressing sizes

Not every large wound is the same, and island dressings are used in a versatile way for wounds of different sizes and types. They are therefore available in many different shapes (rectangular or square island dressings). The sizes vary from 5 cm to 10 cm in length and from 7 to 30 cm in width.

How do you apply an island dressing?

When applying the island dressing, it is very important that the wound is first cleaned and disinfected with a disinfectant. After that, the island dressing can be applied to the skin just like a normal dressing. However, it is important that the wound pad is not touched when applying it, so that the wound remains hygienic and no infections can occur.

How long can you leave an island dressing on?

How long an island dressing can be left on depends heavily on the wound, the amount of exudate, and the circumstances. For most wounds, the dressing should be replaced daily. After surgery, it is better for wound healing to leave the dressing on longer.
