Result of blood sugar test

Blood sugar value - tested on an empty stomach (8 hours before without eating or drinking anything except water):

• Under 6.1 mmol/ l - no diabetes
• Between 6.1 and 6.9 mmol/l - pre-diabetes
• Above 6.9 mmol/l - diabetes

Blood sugar value - not fasted (about one and a half to two hours after a meal, when blood sugar is highest):

• Below 7, 8 mmol/l - no diabetes
• Between 7.8 and 11 mmol/l - prediabetes
• Above 11 mmol/l - diabetes

Many meters have a small deviation. The numbers after the decimal point can therefore be slightly lower or higher in reality.

Measuring blood sugar with a finger prick

Only a blood test can make clear whether someone has diabetes. This is often done with a finger prick. In a drop of blood, the blood sugar (blood glucose) is measured at that moment.

Blood test in the laboratory

The blood is often tested in a laboratory as an extra check. The results may be different because the blood sugar measured in a fingertip is different than in a larger blood vessel. Nowadays, the blood sugar meter itself converts the value into a laboratory result when a finger is pricked.

What exactly is blood sugar or blood glucose?

The body mainly obtains blood sugar from food. Carbohydrates that you eat, such as in bread, sugar and potatoes, enter the blood as glucose. This blood glucose (blood sugar) travels throughout the body and gives energy to all cells. Blood sugar is vital: you can't live without it. Normally, the body keeps the blood sugar level exactly in balance: not too much and not too little. With diabetes, that balance is lost and treatment is needed to lower blood sugar.
